VEX V5 Robotics Competition – Override (2026–2027)

Welcome to the new Competition season: VEX V5RC OVERRIDE!

A game that raises the level of competition through advanced strategic planning, territorial control, and precise robot operation, enabling both rookie teams and championship contenders to quickly understand the game structure and be ready to compete.

The VEX V5RC Override field measures 12 ft × 12 ft and features alliance-based gameplay. Two alliances, Red and Blue, each consisting of two teams, compete head-to-head.

Each match consists of:

•Autonomous Period: 15 seconds
• Driver-Controlled Period: 1 minute 45 seconds

Total Match Time: 2 minutes

The primary objective is to score points by placing Pins and Cups onto Goals, controlling Toggles to claim field ownership, and positioning robots within the Midfield area during the Endgame period for additional bonus points.

During Autonomous, teams may also earn the Autonomous Bonus and the Autonomous Win Point by completing specific objectives. OVERRIDE rewards strong engineering, programming, strategic planning, and alliance coordination.

1. Match Format

• Alliance Matches (Head-to-Head)

Matches are played between two alliances:

• Red Alliance: 2 teams
• Blue Alliance: 2 teams

A total of 4 robots compete simultaneously on the field. Teams must coordinate strategies, divide scoring responsibilities, and work together to outperform their opponents.

• Match Duration: 2-minute match consists of the following periods:

Autonomous Period (First 15 Seconds): Robots operate entirely through pre-programmed code. The alliance with the highest Autonomous score receives a 10-point Autonomous Bonus and the opportunity to earn an Autonomous Win Point (AWP) by completing the required objectives.
Driver-Controlled Period (Next 1 Minute 45 Seconds): The driver controls the robot using a handheld controller.
Endgame Period (Final 10 Seconds): Endgame Period (Final 10 Seconds): During the last 10 seconds of the Driver-Controlled Period, teams may complete special Endgame tasks to earn bonus points.

• Robot Skills Matches: Teams may also participate in individual Robot Skills Challenges, including a 1-minute Driving Skills Match and a 1-minute Autonomous Coding Skills Match.

2. Scoring Objects & Field Elements

• Pins: 1.6 inches in diameter and 6.5 inches in height. Pins are available in red, blue and yellow. Ownership of yellow pins depends on the status of the field Toggles.

• Cups: 3.15 inches in diameter and 6.5 inches in height. Each Cup consists of transparent and opaque sections.

• Goals: The field contains 9 goals, divided into 3 categories:

Center Goal: 8.7 inches high
Quadrant Goals: 5.8 inches high
Alliance Goals: 3.25 inches high

• Toggles: triangular field elements located around the field perimeter. Their purpose is to change alliance ownership and control scoring ownership of yellow Pins within their respective Quadrants.

• Loaders: two loading stations are located on each alliance side of the field, allowing teams to legally introduce Match Loads into play during a match in accordance with competition rules.

3. Field Divisions & Endgame

• Quadrants: The field is divided into four triangular Quadrants. Each Quadrant contains: 2 Goals and 1 Toggle.

• Midfield & Endgame: a square-shaped area located at the center of the field and marked by white tape boundaries. During the final 10 seconds of the match, robots must move into the Midfield to earn valuable Endgame bonus points. Successful Endgame positioning can often determine the outcome of closely contested matches.

4. Key Regulations

• Student-Centered Policy: each team must consist of at least three students, with clearly defined roles such as Designer, Builder, Coder, and Strategist. Coaches and mentors may provide guidance and teach concepts, but they must not build the robot or write code on behalf of the students.
• Major Violations & Disqualification: teams may be immediately disqualified (DQ) for intentionally damaging an opponent's robot, interfering with an opponent's scoring goals beyond normal game interaction, or violating the official Code of Conduct.
